A Nonprofit organization based in Saint Victor la Coste, near Avignon in Provence, La Sabranenque has been working since 1969 for the preservation of the rural Mediterranean habitat - its heritage, its architecture, its techniques. This effort has been an integral one: in rural architecture, it is impossible to separate people from buildings, buildings from their context. The techniques and methods, the "style," are the simple result of the encounter of builders, their needs, the regional conditions, and the local materials.

La Sabranenque has always based its preservation projects on this all-encompassing way that the rural habitat was created. The preservation and reconstruction of the actual structures is always done with their present-day use in mind, always with local materials and simple techniques, and always also with the participation of fully-involved hands-on volunteers.

Saint Victor la Coste was the initial project undertaken by La Sabranenque. This award-winning project fully respected the traditional architecture, while integrating modern comfort into the dozen or so houses making up the complex.

Since the completion of the large part of the old village of Saint Victor la Coste in the early 1980's, La Sabranenque has worked on many different projects. These range from simple village paths to entire complexes of houses designed to become village activity centers, the restored site of Saint Victor la Coste now serving as a "home base."

International activities brought La Sabranenque in contact with partner organizations in Mediterranean Europe, and several projects are now organized in collaboration with groups in Italy.
